“Gary remains uncooperative.”
There is a man. There is a rowboat. There is Gary, who is very large, very purple, and would like the man to stop. The man will not stop.
Man vs. Gary is an idle boss-siege: every attempt gets you a little further, every drowning gets you an incident report, and every retired captain leaves permanent bonuses for the next fool in the boat. Gary, meanwhile, has hundreds of lines of commentary and has filed a complaint with HR.

Key mechanics.
The idle boss-siege
One boss. One boat. Progress that keeps stacking whether you are watching or not. Gary is always there, and he is always bored of you.
File the incident report
Every drowning produces paperwork. Every piece of paperwork makes the next attempt a little less doomed.
Captain retirement
Retire a captain with honours and their bonuses become permanent. The next captain starts angrier, and better.
Gary has opinions
Hundreds of lines of monster commentary, dialogue and complaint. He has seen a lot of boats. He is not impressed by yours.
Wishlist it.
A wishlist is the single most useful thing you can do for a small studio. It tells Steam the game exists, and it tells you the moment it is out.
